– we have the traditional habit to eat ‘Nana-Kusa-Gayu’
[七草粥:salty rice porridge with chopped seven herbs
that are emblematic of early spring and cut rice cake pieces ]
– in the fresh of morning on January 7
– way back when i was child
– the surface of rice cakes had gotten green mold
– already at the time of year
– so we scraped the mold off the hard surfaces of the mochi
– in order to make the next breakfast porridge salubriously
– though the gluel smelled musty annually
