菊の着綿

菊に綿著せし翁嫗が白髪かな

キクニワタ　キセシオウウガ　シラガカナ

– there was the tradition in Japan
– (it originates ‘Ancient’-Chine)
– that people set the cotton puffs
– which were used to resemble the dew
– in September 8 (a day before 9-9) evening
– on the chrysanthemum flower all night
– and next morning they took up the puffs
– then they dried their face with them
– or sent somebody whom they wished the longevity
– the puffs as the present
– because folklore had it
– that the double-nines-day’s dew
– had the longevity principality
– and people got the long life
– to wipe and dry one’s face
– with the bedewed cotton
