Aka-Chouchin [赤提灯] means ‘the red lantern sign that was written
the pub name [for example: 鳥よし(Tori-yoshi: Nice chicken)] of the
Japanese style pub for ordinary people on it’. We, Japanese, like to
use metaphorize in the informal conversation. For example, when
the workfellows arrange to go to the Japanese pub together after
office hours, of course, they cannot speak aloud their plan there
openly, so they take place a hush conversation about those plans,
and they never say the rest, such as:
A: どうです、今日？仕事のあと、一杯？
B: いぃですねぇ。やりましょう。
A: では、いつもの、赤提灯で。七時ということで。
B: はあはあ、わかりました。いつものね、あそこで。七時。じゃ。
A: Dou-desu, Kyou? Shigoto no ato, Ippai?
B: Iidesu-ne. Yarimashou.
A: Deha, Itsumono, Aka-Chouchin de. Shichi-ji toiu kotode.
B: Haa-Haa, Wakari mashitta. Itsumono-ne, Asokode. Shichi-ji, Jyatt.
A: “Ah, what would you … ? this evening … after hours …,
Ah, … I am in the mood … yep, for a…, you know … .”
B: “Yeh, um all for it. I have the mood, too …”
A: “Then, How about … usual ‘Aka-Chouchin’, at seven o’? ”
B:”Yep, yep … I know. Usual, we-know-where … that time … 7 … let’s …”
